Who We Are
Welcome to Affinity Radio — making waves across the North East.
We’re a community-driven radio station broadcasting across South Shields, Tynemouth, Newcastle, and Gateshead, bringing people together through great music, real stories, and local voices that matter.
Operated by Affinity Media NE CIC, our mission is simple: to connect, entertain, and inform. From feel-good hits and local news to community features and live shows, everything we do is rooted in the people and places we serve.
Formerly known as Radio Shields, we’ve grown into a modern, multi-area station and are proud to be part of the UK’s pioneering small-scale DAB network—delivering a vibrant mix of music, conversation, and community connection every day.
Our Journey
Affinity Radio began its journey as Affinity Radio Shields, launching on 11th December 2021 as one of the first stations on small-scale DAB in the UK.
We expanded in December 2024, launching Affinity Radio Newcastle across Newcastle and Gateshead—marking a major step in our growth across the region.
Both milestone moments were hosted by Pam Royal, celebrating not only our progress but also the dedication of those who helped build the station from the ground up.
In June 2025, following approval from Ofcom, we officially united our services under one name:
Affinity Radio North East
This brought everything together into one stronger, more connected station—focused on championing local voices and delivering great radio across the region.

That’s why we’re proud to work alongside partners including Red Army Group and Tyneside Community Digital, helping bring more than 20 stations to listeners across Tyneside.
We also work closely with local councils, businesses, charities, and community groups—supporting initiatives, amplifying voices, and staying connected to what matters most locally.
